Syllabus
Description of Course
The general music class will provide for a greater understanding of the elements of music (rhythm, melody, harmony, form, timbre, tempo, dynamics). This will take place through learning to play the guitar. Instructional time will be spent learning proper technique in playing guitar and practicing the skills being taught. Students will use classical style guitars that will be assigned to each individual for classroom use. Our classroom has three sizes of instruments, Mr. Coleman, to the best of his ability will assign students guitars that match the student for the greatest chance of success.
Core Standards: “Students will be able to”:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of music through written assignments as well as performance on guitar.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles under which musical instruments produce different timbres and pitches.
3. Develop an understanding of music and art, the people who create these works, and their place in music.
Grading and Homework
All assignments will be completed in class. Students will be given time to complete assignments in class and will not have homework assigned. Each student will receive points for each assignment completed and the final grade will be a calculation of those points earned. There will be a playing assignment each week that will coincide with the objective of the week. Playing the small melodies and songs will count for the largest portion the grade of the class. If for any reason a student would like to retake a playing test for a better grade that can be scheduled with Mr. Coleman.
